Is it really all what its talked up to be? I guess you will hear my opinion below!
Bora Bora is an island in the French Polynesia. It's part of the society islands and is a sought out honeymoon destination. Known for its gorgeous blue waters and over water bungalows. It is also know for how expensive it can be, and well that part is not wrong.
Lets start with getting there. The flight path isn't terrible. Vancouver-San Francisco- Tahiti, then to Bora Bore. French Polynesia only has two airlines to choose from: Air Tahiti, and brand new airline Moana. Flights from Tahiti are around 500$ CAN round trip. You can also take a ferry for Tahiti or most islands for a fraction of the cost, it will just take longer, roughly 8hours. The flight is only 30-40mins. The reason why I liked the flight is was we flew around the whole island like a private helicopter tour with dirty windows! I read on a blog to get on the right side of the plane and that didn't disappoint. You want the right side coming and going! Air Tahiti is rush seating so don't worry about trying to book your seats early. Flying within Tahiti was interesting we didn't have to go through security at all, checked the bag and walked straight to the gate! So great is you are running behind!
Now The Society Islands have a few neat tourist hacks and benefits for people. You can actually get an Air Tahiti Pass and fly smoothly around multiple islands, 47 to be exact. Island hopping I think is such a great way to check out all the islands, or at least a handful! More information on the website-- .www.airtahiti.p
Now lets get into how I did my trip. Flight prices vary and are constantly changing. overall flights are more expensive after these last few years of little to no travel. I think they will only get better with time and more people traveling. I paid 2400CAN for the flight play mentioned above.
Landing in Tahiti in the evening, we found our airbnb and got some dinner and settled in for the night. The next day we sent out exploring the city and walking around everywhere. don't forget to download your offline google maps is you don't have service or won't be getting a SIM card. From here we took the ferry to Mo'orea, a quick 30min ferry and super easy to catch at the port, you have two options of ferry between these islands. the Aremiti and the Terevau.I spend most of my time on the island of Mo'orea and will get into that adventure another day. Today we are focusing on Bora Bora because my instagram blew up when I posted a photo from it.
I flew to Bora Bora from Mo'orea, direct flight, 20mins. When we landed we were greeted by our hotel staff and took a boat to our hotel. The airport is on a Motu so you have to take a boat, no matter where you are staying. Motu is old coral that has risen and now become a small island. This is what makes Bora Bora so special, it has a mainland but it is surrounded by Motu.

This maps just helps explain the island a but more, the resorts on on the sides.
I had booked a resort, because I wanted the full experience. I booked Le Bora Bora by pearl resorts. one of the upper end resorts. Bora Bora is full of resorts and places to stay. even the mainland has hotels, airbnbs ad so many more affordable stays. SO how I booked this was I contacted the resort directly and book a garden view for the first night and a overwater bungalow the second, to save some monies. I heard this hack on tiktok and you can get upgraded to the more expensive room. Which happened to me!! Woop Woop! I also wrote in the comments it was my birthday, which is was. This for two night was 2800CAN. I told you it was expensive. Now I see on Costco travel you can book resorts at Bora Bora including dinners. Which when you book with them isn't often included. When leaving after paying for booze and dinner for two nights. the airport transfer and environmental fees I still owed another 1000CAN. This report was stunning the huts were amazing, and clean. they had free unlimited water. A swim up bar and a few options for dinner. Our first dinner was amazing, However the second night at the buffet that I expected to be cheaper wasn't as good and went cheaper...
Having two nights on Bora Bora wasn't enough. If I were to go again I would stay 4 nights. Spend the first two nights on the mainland. See the sites and stay in an airbnb. Go to the market and pick up some booze and food and then go and stay on the resort with all my snacks and booze that I got from the mainland.
I personally think that some other island are just as beautiful. Most have Motu and gorgeous blue waters and even better coral to snorkel. ALSO the other island also have overwater bungalows for a fraction of the price as Bora Bora! SO that is definitely something to consider if you are looking at your budget and the trip is getting out of hand.
Okay I don't know if I touched on everyones questions but this is my overall. I will probably add most when I finally get around to making a blog of the whole trip!
The French Polynesia thrives on tourism and they actually have such a great and informative website https://tahititourisme.com/en-us/
